Rashaun Jamall Martin was born in Roxbury and raised in Dorchester, MA. As a graduate of the Boston Latin School, Class of 1997, he went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in History from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. in 2001. From there, he earned a Master's of Arts in Teaching in 2002 and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Education Administration in 2006 from Simmons College in Boston.
In the Spring of 2019, Rashaun returned to the Boston Public Schools to assume a new role as the Educators of Color Cultivation & Retention Specialist after serving as the Interim Education Manager for the USS Constitution Museum in Charlestown. While in this position, he expanded the ALANA Cultivation Program and the Male and Women Educators of Color Executive Coaching Leadership programs, supported provisional and permanent educators of color, instituted a degree completion program for employees with area colleges and universities, and established a mentor program for 2nd and 3rd year educators of color, culminating in a comprehensive portfolio of Retention Programs and Services which also includes a monthly newsletter, support for Affinity Groups, and Exit Interviews.
Currently, Rashaun J. Martin is the Managing Director of Recruitment, Cultivation and Diversity Programs in the Office of Human Resources for the Boston Public Schools. Previously, he was the Acting Director of Recruitment in which he led the efforts for the BPS to recruit and hire more than 800 teachers through a myriad of programs including early hiring pools, recruitment fellows, and culturally specific recruitment fairs in addition to supervising a staff of three recruitment managers.
Recently, he was admitted to the Kappa Delta Pi honor society at Regis College for excellence in education and received the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award from the Caribbean Foundation of Boston. In addition, was recognized with a 2022 Black Excellence on the Hill award by the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus of the Great and General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, was the 25th anniversary recipient of the Archdiocese of Boston Bishop James Augustine Healy Award in 2018; the highest award given to an African-American for their service to the Catholic church, and received the Crystal Apple for excellence in teaching from the Boston Latin School in 2007. Rashaun completed the Massachusetts Education Policy Fellowship Program through the Rennie Center and has recently presented his work on diversity and retention at Yale University and for TNTP.
