Archbishop Shelton Fabre

Archbishop Shelton Fabre was raised in Louisiana and is the fifth of six children. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Baton Rouge on August 5th, 1989.

He was appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans in 2006. As Auxiliary Bishop, he worked to help rebuild the Archdiocese after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

In 2013, he was appointed as Bishop of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux.

On February 8th, 2022, Pope Francis appointed him as the tenth Bishop and fifth Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Louisville. He was installed as Archbishop at the Kentucky International Convention Center on March 30th , 2022. His Episcopal Motto is, “Comfort My People”.

From 2018 to 2023, Archbishop Fabre served as the chair of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism and led the writing of the Bishops’ most recent pastoral letter on racism, called “Open Wide Our Hearts – The Enduring Call to Love”. He currently is a bishop-consultor on the USCCB Committee of Domestic Justice and Human Development and is a member of the USCCB Committee on Laity, Marriage, and Family Life. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Catholic Relief Services, on the Board of Trustees of the National Black Catholic Congress, and on the Board of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States.
