We control resources and can make decisions that impact not just the organization, but also the people who work there (and their families). The fact is, those people are dependent on us and the greater that dependency, the more power we have. Given this, it is imperative that we handle their dependency - our power - delicately.
We must cultivate the habit of asking ourselves this question: How will I handle their dependency? Even more fundamental than that, we must question - and allow others to question our motives. Am I going to use my power to advance my personal interests? Or am I going to use my power to create an environment where people can flourish, grow, and thrive? J.
