About Our Speaker
Emily grew up in Stayton, Oregon where she attended St. Mary grade school and Regis High School. She went to college at the University of Arizona and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 2006. She then joined the US military and graduated pilot training in 2008. For the next 12 years Emily served on active duty in the military flying combat and peacetime missions in the C-17 Globemaster. She deployed four times supporting many overseas contingency operations in the middle east. During this time, she earned her Master of Arts in Theology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville through distance learning.
In 2017 Emily left active duty and joined the reserves as a C-17 Evaluator pilot. Currently she serves as Director of Operations for the United States Antarctic Program's C-17 unit. This unit flies resupply missions from Christchurch, NZ to the United States' McMurdo Base in Antarctica supporting the National Science Foundation. Emily was hired by Alaska Airlines in 2018 and currently flies Boeing 737 aircraft for the airline out of Portland International Airport. She moved back to her home town in 2019 as the 5th generation farmer and timber manager on her family's homestead.
Emily has traveled to over 60 countries and climbed many mountains, especially in the Pacific Northwest. She enjoys many outdoor activities and loves music and reading. She is on the board of directors for both Chesterton Academy of the Willamette Valley High School and for The Grotto in Portland. Emily volunteers as an OCIA catechist at both her home parish of Immaculate Conception in Stayton and St. Mary in Mount Angel. She also uses her theological studies by offering many adult catechesis talks and events. Part of this ministry involves preparing fun evenings pairing alcohol with theological topics and occasionally icons. Some examples of these include beer and the O' Antiphons, Scotch and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and sipping wine while contemplating Byzantine icons.
Our event is in the southern/kitchen side of the Parish Hall at Our Lady of the Lake. Walk inside the doors near the parking lot (where the red star is on the map), and then through the very next open set of double doors inside. We'll have signs to guide you!
There is plenty of space for parking in the church lot, which is entered from 8th street. Two Trimet stops are close by. Below is an image with an overlay of the bus routes and parking options.
